He has also demanded bosses at leisure group Greenwich Leisure Ltd (GLL), which owns the complex, meet him in person.

Mr Shapps said: “I’m very concerned by news of the planned closure of the main hall at Gosling Sports Park.

“Its closure could be a terrible loss to the community.

“I am also particularly dismayed at GLL’s failure to inform me in advance of the planned closure. This whole idea seems rushed and ill-thought through.

“They need to think again.”

Bosses at Gosling Sports Park, near Stanborough, WGC, say they need to close the main hall, home to a variety of clubs and activities including badminton, squash and martial arts, as it was making huge losses.

They say they want to focus resources on the more modern buildings on-site.

They have staged a series of public meetings this week with users.

Mr Shapps said: “I’ve demanded a meeting with GLL, and at this meeting I will call for a moratorium on the closure to allow time for local groups, the MP and others to discuss the future of the sports hall.

“In short, I will be doing my utmost to support Welwyn Hatfield constituents on this important issue.”

At one of the public meetings a representative for Mr Shapps, unable to attend due to commitments at Westminster, told the audience: “Grant shares your disappointment on this issue.

He understands just how many people, groups and schools would be affected by this closure, and is fighting hard to have this decision reversed.

“He has demanded a meeting with GLL, and he will keep you updated on his progress.”

Mr Shapps is eager to meet with local residents or groups to hear what Gosling’s sports hall means to them. He can be contacted on email at grant@shapps.com, and via his constituency office on 01707 262632.
