Mr Shapps, the MP for Welwyn Hatfield, met with a constituent to discus her concerns regarding retirees in Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield.
A representative of WelHat U3A, an organisation that provides opportunities for the continuing intellectual, cultural and aesthetic development for people no longer in full time paid employment, met with Mr Shapps to inform him about the troubles the group has faced since the pandemic.
Bharati Chauhan, the representative in question, raised the issue the group has been having regarding finding venues for their events since the local authorities no longer let WelHat U3A use their sheltered accommodation halls for their events.
Mr Shapps listened to the concerns raised and has written to the Chief Executive of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and Herts County Council about WelHat U3A’s issues. He has also written to a variety of care homes within his constituency appealing for them to provide space so that WelHat U3A’s events can continue to host their fantastic events.
Mr Shapps knows what a great organisation WelHat U3A are from hearing about it from his own parents and was sorry to hear about their circumstances. He implores the local authorities and care homes to respond to WelHat U3A’s concerns by making space available for them and their events. He also encourages any individuals or groups who have sustainable venues to get in touch with WelHat U3A or himself.
