Local MP Grant Shapps visited Oaklands College in Welwyn Garden City following an
“Introduction to Your UK Parliament” engagement workshop on campus.

During the visit to a bustling Oaklands Campus, the Welwyn Hatfield MP took questions from
students, who were keen to hear his views on a range of issues, and to learn more about the
work of MPs.

Students used the opportunity to ask Mr Shapps about what inspired him to get into politics, as
well as issues that impacted them locally.

In addition to an extensive Q&A with students, Mr Shapps toured the college with Principal
Andrew Slade.

The pair discussed many aspects of the college, including its development plans and proud
record of producing national-level athletes.

When speaking about the visit Mr Shapps said, “it was fantastic to see so many young people
with such a burning interest in politics, and as I said during the visit, they should get involved at
all levels – whether that be through campaigning, debating, or even standing for office
themselves.

“I hope many of those in the room today were inspired – just as I was as a younger person – to
take up the mantle and stand up for what they believe in, regardless of political persuasion.”

Following Mr Shapps’ comments, Mr Slade added, “I’d like to say a massive thank you to Grant
for taking the time to come to Oaklands and talk to our students about Parliament.

“It was great for them to hear first-hand all about the work of an MP, especially a Cabinet
Minister, and how Parliament operates.”
