Welwyn Hatfield MP Grant Shapps has voiced his support for the residents of Welwyn village, after news that Barclays plan to close their Welwyn village high street branch came to light.

Welwyn Hatfield Parish Council discussed the issue in depth at their meeting this week. The branch in question is the only walk-in bank in the vicinity of Welwyn village, and its closure would leave hundreds of people without access to banking facilities.

Mr Shapps was voting in Parliament until 11pm, and so was not able to attend the meeting. A representative of his reiterated the MP’s concerns regarding the closure.

“Grant has heard from lots of people on this, and he understands exactly how badly this would affect the people of Welwyn village.

“He is particularly concerned at the effect this would have on the elderly and disabled members of the community.”

Mr Shapps is due to meet with senior members of Barclays over the next few weeks, and at this meeting he will be turning up the heat on the bank, and reminding them of their obligation to the community.
