The name's Blond, Phillip Blond: will supermarkets be shaken and stirred?
« Reply #90 on: December 03, 2009, 05:52:57 PM »
A Conservative government should move to break the dominance of Britain’s supermarket chains, David Cameron’s latest intellectual adviser has said. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/6663401/Phillip-Blond-Conservatives-should-break-up-big-supermarkets.html

Thought the above would prove an interesting debate within this thread. If enacted, how would Blond's proposals impact on current and prospective supermarket developments in Welwyn Hatfield? Remember, the big four are Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda and Morrisons all of which have stores across the district. Could this mean Sainsbury would have to contract its expansion plans? Would Tesco WGC proposals be shelved and packed off on a trolley? Would Asda's doors revolve no more? Would there be more, or less, reasons to shop at Morrisons?

Sainsbury's expansion and the new WGC Tesco
« Reply #91 on: March 10, 2010, 05:44:31 PM »
What's happening on the Sainsbury's expansion front then? When's the work starting for their bigger store? Anybody know? I know they've stalled several times in the past but, though I don't like shopping there, at least that part of the town won't be such an eyesore once it's up and running.

The Tesco development's gone quiet too recently. Any news?

Sainsbury's Express for former Colanders Cook Shop Spot?
« Reply #92 on: June 29, 2010, 05:06:27 PM »
I noticed Sainsbury's have a poster on 30-32 Howardsgate, the former Colanders Cook Shop, that indicates they are applying for an alcohol licence for the premises. Does that suggest this is where Sainsbury's will hook-up whilst its current store is demolished and rebuilt - if that ever happens. They do seem to be making all the right noises and moves now etc such planning to close of parts of Church Road...but something niggles me.

Also, still don't know why the Main Post Office, opposite, on Howardgate has also applied for a similar licence - I'm sticking with my Spar theory for now.

We need the main Post Office to stay as it is and not go down drain like the one in Hatfield did.

I was told today that the new owners of the old Tonys newsagents on manor parade are going to sell to Tesco so they can make a smaller shop, i believe that the tile shop next door is closing as well so it would make an ideal place for Tesco to put a smaller outlet what with it being so close to the new estate and business park.

it may well be just another rumor but it seems like the kind of thing they would do if they had the chance.
