A decision was made to release the offenders, which was not a popular move, but can a ten year old be imprisoned for the rest of their life? We are all very different people to who we were at 10 years old. I know that they did a terrible terrible thing but as an adult they may be different given support.
I agree we are different people in adult life to the child we were at ten. At ten, however, we knew the difference between right and wrong. At ten "wrong" is normally being what would normally be described as "naughty". However naughtiness and pure evil are totally different things.
Certainly I accept that Venables' was dragged up by low life no hopers (what a shame these people can reproduce) which undoubtedly caused him to become the murderer he is. My argument simply is that the damage done to him is likely to be irreversible and, consequently, allowing him ever to return to mainstream life should not have been countenanced.
I realise the idea of putting to death a child, even one like Venables, is a non starter to most people. However I would argue that people like Venables, because of what their upbringing has made them into, should never be re integrated into society and that, therefore, terminating their existence, as one would for example a rabid dog, may be seen as a more humane alternative to locking them away, probably in almost solitary confinement because of their crimes, for the rest of their lives.
