25/02/2010 Start ceremony for Knella Road development
« on: February 26, 2010, 07:32:41 PM »
A new development site for 24 affordable homes on the former allotment site in Knella Road, Welwyn Garden City, will be opened by Councillor Kim Langley, Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, and Grant Shapps MP, on Friday 12 March.
The development is funded by a £960k grant from the Homes and Communities Agency, and is being delivered through a partnership between Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and Affinity Sutton on behalf of William Sutton Homes.

The properties will be let from the council's housing register through its Choice Based Lettings scheme. The new homes were advertised in the Herts Choice Homes Magazine last December. Over 200 bids were received, which have now been shortlisted to those in greatest need of housing.

The development will comprise of a sustainable mix of homes:

•8x two bedroom flats,
•1x wheelchair adapted four bedroom house,
•9x three bedroom houses,
•6x two bedroom houses.
Affinity Sutton, which provides services to William Sutton Homes, will own and manage the properties. As part of the development, Affinity Sutton has pledged to make £75k worth of improvements to Herns Wood, a small wooded area adjacent to the site. New and existing residents will be consulted on what they would like to see in the woods.

Work has already started on site and the scheme is expected to be completed by the end of 2010.

Councillor Roger Trigg, Executive Member for Housing, said: "This is a great development for the borough, giving a new lease of life to an unused site. The properties will provide a high-level of energy-saving housing, help meet the high local demand for housing, and provide important investment in conserving the surrounding area."

Kerry Kyriacou, Group Director of New Business and Development for Affinity Sutton, said: "We are delighted to be working with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council in building much needed new affordable homes."
