Forum Censorship
« on: February 25, 2010, 09:00:36 AM »
I would like an opinion on what is going on on this forum.

It appears to me that there is a concerted effort to squash any form of robust debate by the selective editing of posts made here. I note also that some members who have joined in debate previously are no longer bothering (I am not suggesting that censorship is the reason, however it does seem coincidental).

Is it me? Am I being paranoid?

Or has this segment of the forum degenerated ?
Happy to be shot down (and withdraw probably) if I am alone in thinking this way.

I think this post may soon be deleted. I posted something along similar lines a short while back and received a reply by e mail to my personal address from a moderator, the essence of which was that issues regarding moderation were not going to be discussed on the forum.

There seems to be a belief that some debates degenerate into personal abuse, something which I have not noticed, although I readily concede I do not read every single post.

I believe possibly the censorship issue has arisen as a result of a rather dramatic, and public, "resignation" from the board a few weeks back which cited personal attacks as the reason.

Thanks.

So I am not the only one then.
I fully expect this thread to be deleted also.
I think I know who you are talking about, I thought that was rather childish and silly, but hey, thats me.

So, not only are posts edited, by choice of topic is also censored?

Great.

The forum agreement is here for all to see. All points are important, but please note in particular points 1, 4, 5, 12 and 13.

I can assure you that the recent, so called 'public, "resignation"' from the board has not changed our moderation policies.

Thanks for that.
I re-read the rules but I am still at a loss as to why my posts have been edited. I do not beleive I have broken any of those rules. I accept that you have devised rules that give you carte blanche to do as you please, but would have thought that unless there was actual abuse or flagrant disregard for your rules that in the spirit of free speech you would not do that. Whilst accepting, as I stated in my previous post, that I do not read every post on the forum, I can only see that one rule has been broken. This is of course Rule 13 which specifically refers to administration and moderation.

The moderators comment that the public resignation has not influenced recent events is noted, although I do find the timing of the recent "hardening" of policy and it's proximity to the "toys out of the pram" episode somewhat coincidental.

As far as I am aware I have not had a post censored, other than those relating to this topic, so maybe what I am going to suggest is already done.  My suggestion simply is that if a post is amended or deleted could the poster not be privately contacted and informed precisely why the action was taken?  This would surely avoid the confusion which appears to prevail at present.

We do this whenever we can, except in extreme cases such as swear words.

Lid,
Could I commend you on allowing this breach of the rules to allow this discussion of moderation? I'm sure that you and your colleagues will maintain respect when, as you are doing here, you explain the approach you take.
Thanks
Mike
