The Rutting Season - verging on the ridiculous !
« on: February 11, 2010, 08:33:45 AM »
Can't find a link yet to the WH Times story, but its unbelievable that WHDC are not prepared to persuade motorists to park properly.
I can understand that when it snows hard it is difficult to see where the road ends and the kerb starts but most of the year you've got to be a pretty bad driver even to consider driving onto the grass verge.
The usual inane comment from Mandy Perkins.

WH Times update from last week - http://www.whtimes.co.uk/news/on_the_verge_of_sorting_out_welwyn_hatfield_s_churned_up_grass_verges_1_210718

It would help a little if residents and van drivers could repair their own damage ?

Well, a poster has written:

"If a less than perfect grass verge is the price that has to be paid for my car not to be repeatedly damaged by idiot drivers passing too close then so be it! You lot should get a life......ITS JUST A BIT OF GRASS!!!"

So, I guess this explains why Campion Road is full of cars that park, or merely wait to pick up/drop off, along the verges - which are ruined after the cold and wet weather.

It's not just residents. It's their visitors, it's the postman that always parks on the grass or the cycle path, and taxis. Vans also park there to deliver packages and I've seen a Pickfords removal lorry that tore the grass to shreds.

But, hey, it's just grass!

What I would say though is that it is crazy that councils are allowing (or being forced to allow) narrow roads to be built on new estates, which means that when people park - as they will - it makes the road too narrow for cars to pass. Although I wouldn't want to get rid of verges completely, as it helps separate people from traffic, the council could perhaps try and push for indented parking areas every now and then - which would in turn create passing points.

The reason narrow roads are built on new estates is greed, as the developers, will not be living there.

Yes, I know this - but the council COULD force developers to build sufficient roads and parking. However, they're under pressure to reduce car parking AND spaces for visitors, because some idiot figured people would get rid of their cars as a result.

No, they don't, they just park them anyway! Hence the mess.

Developers will always try and get away with what they can, which is why someone should have more power than them.

Massive gas mains replacement for Welwyn Garden City

Obviously these works need to be done but I hope someone ensures they relay pavements properly and reinstate grass verges after they've done their work.

P.S. They only seem to be doing one half of the town...I wonder why? Ummmm...
