Items in second hand shops
« on: January 15, 2010, 02:39:58 PM »
Recently, I had a small table and chairs set for a child, to give to a second hand shop.

One I approached said if it was in really good condition, it would be sent to WGC - because "they can get more money for it there than in Hatfield!!

great - even second hand shops think only Hatfield has the 'riff raff'!

What good would independence do for this particular example?

The fact is, people probably do have more money in WGC, so if you had a choice - you'd sell something there.

A charity shop clearly wants/needs to make as much money as possible!

Jon - fair comment, but if Hatfield is as poor as it seems to second hand shops surely they should be helping locals who donate the items locally to help our poorer folk?

I gave it to a shop I knew would sell it in the Hatfield shop.

I see your point, but perhaps you should use something like Freecycle?

You will get traders coming to pick up items to sell on, but they're fairly easy to spot. They nearly always have a van that looks like it's been to every car boot sale or market in the world. They might even pretend that they've borrowed it, which is somewhat unlikely unless they've arranged temporary insurance cover just to pick up some furniture.

Many insurance policies allow you to drive other vehicles that don't belong to you, as long as the owner has them insured.

That's a luxury that has been removed on most policies now. Mine was removed and it wasn't made particularly clear (well it WAS in the summary for renewal, but that's something you often don't read).

It was only ever third party cover though, so how many people would seriously expect to get permission to drive another vehicle unless it was a right old banger?

My sister used to work for a charity as store manager.  The whole purpose of the shops is to maximise money for the charities, not sell things cheap for locals.

For example the clothes that we considered good stayed in her shop in a rich town.  The cheap clothes went to a bargin basement store in a much poorer area.

That's why charity shop managers now have sales targets just like the rest of retail and the area managers ask questions if targets are not met and close stores that don't make enough, sadly.

Hash world out there these days
