Sex Education for 10 year olds?
« on: October 24, 2006, 08:59:12 AM »
In some ways if that happens, I feel it is those in authority giving the 'green light' to underage sex.

BUT then again, what of those who are sexually active anyway?  I cannot help feeling that those who are sexually active at that age are 'victims' of abuse.  I know some children who are sexually abused  become sexually active because they associate sex with love and the boundaries get distorted.  Hence why the child concerned has sex at an early age anyway.

This is a difficult one.....

Of course!? In fact I'd be rather concerned if 10 year olds were not given basic sex education both at home and at school. By year 7, they should be learning basic human anatomy, including the names and location of the reproductive organs. Or have we now dumbed down education so much they leave this till they are older?

hey what is all the fuss about?

any one would think it was a new idea!
sex education for 9 to 11 year olds at primary school was being taught in hatfield in 1992 (five oaks now De Haviland primary) admittedly it was fairly basic but it gave the children a good insite into family structure and planning.
no child was harmed and it did far more good for mixed class relations than was given credit for.

Indeed, im sure i was taught this stuff in school at this age anyway? cant say it made me want to go out and do those things that frankly, at that time, looked quite bizzare!

Lid - I agree with you.  I think education is 'good' so long as it does not boarder on pornographic / explicit.

When I was about 13 (I think) we were told the 'facts of life' (as it was known then) and I remember thinking how bloo** boring it was - besides which, they could not tell me anything that I had not already been told.

But, it does concern me that children will be given explanations about the Pill and condoms at junior school age (what age is year 7 - they changed all the years since my daughter has been at school).

Year 6 is 10 - 11 year olds
Year 7 is 11 - 12 year olds
Year 8 is 12 - 13 year olds
etc.

In Grammar School we were given fairly basic sex education in what is now year 7 and quite detailed coverage in year 8. I still have my exercise books somewhere!

I had fairly extensive sex education (which included stuff about puberty etc) at 11.  Damn good idea I say.

It helps to dispel all the bullshit myths like you cant get pregnant if you are standing up or if you cross your fingers or something equally absurd.

Kids these days are going to find out about sex pretty soon, with or without sex education.  As such, I'd say its really really really important to educate them about things like contraception and the realities of pregnancy etc before they are likely to need it.

Hi ya !  So Year 7 is about the age I was when I was told then.  Nothing changed then.
