Question: What do you think of the McMullen plans to start a new takeaway at the Harrier Pub?

  • I'm completely against it and want the application to be turned down.
I support the plans and would like to see a new takeaway at High View.
I'm not sure - I need to see more information about it.

Hi there. I am curious as to which Chinese joint you recommend so highly. I like chinese food, but follow a rule that I never buy from a takeaway that has put junk mail through my door.

Surely that's a tad unfair? They can't stay in business on the off chance one day you'll go there! They all need to send out menus and their phone number (if you can order over the phone, or they deliver).

A good result. Shame we all know that if the brewery had been, say, Tesco - the outcome would have been somewhat different!

JM and all
No chance even if it was Tesco, We of the town council said enough is enough.
We have Chinese and Fish and Chips, Kebab shop and sundries, Indian take away, Pizza Make and delivery, then during the day we have the coffee and tea shop at Wot Nots. The Pub also does food and drinks.
So for the area we are well served and dont need another take away.

Great news!

Never let it be said that protesting achieves nothing.

True, it wasnt the best of ideas in the first place, but bad ideas arent always thrown out so easily.

Lets hope the same (if not more) energy is harnessed in the fight against an incinerator being built in the area.

As ghosttown says, now we must use the hall, so if you are planning a birthday party, quiz night, are in a band and want to practice/do a gig or whatever, please do enquire, its cheap, and it has a bar.

And now Mcmullens has appealed to the Planning Inspectorate to overturn the Councils (twice made) decision.

Lets hope its a hat-trick and this truly proposal is finally binned, and Mcmullens realise that Community Halls are important resources for us all, not pieces of land to build flats and fast food outlets on.  I have fully backed this campaign since the proposal was first mooted in 2008 and really hope the final nail is put into the coffin of this ridiculous idea with the Planning Inspectorates decision.

Mcmullens should be concentrating on raising profits from its existing businesses, not damaging local communities.

Who do they think they are, Tesco?

(Actually, Tesco would have succeeded on the first attempt)

Saw this in the paper earlier - good to see Grants being consistent on this one, i.e doing nothing but claiming the credit!

As it is, to be honest asides from the fact a fast food place isnt really needed in the area I dont see a reason to reject it. The Hall is barely used, theres no point crowing about it then not using the facility. Its shocking the lack of function halls in Welwyn Hatfield but theyre not going to keep it open if its not used are they?

I would rather see the landlord of the pub run something regularly there, like the over 30's disco we used to have at the Fairway - not all of us are young enough to get in the new Forum y'know!

Well i remember when we all first opposed it back in 2008 :)

The hall isnt massively used, but it certainly isnt barely used as mcmullens are claiming. Tellingly, its used by local groups and residents (not to mention local politics for meetings and a polling station!) and yet the pub itself does nothing with the hall. A previous landlord held late nights in there and it was ram-packed every weekend. More tellingly, when the pub was done up, they left the hall as is. Clearly with the longview to sell it.

At a time where pubs are being encouraged to get more involved with the local community to save themselves (during what were already hard times for pubs) this brewery seems hellbent on doing the opposite in the chase of short term profit. Shortsighted greed is alive and well.

The main objection seemed to be the loss of the bar - my point is, you cant stamp your feet and complain then carry on NOT using the facility can you? Its used for meetings, judo, eldery dances etc - but when is the bar utilised? The hall will remain as it is, just without a bar!

The landlord should be actively doing something with the hall - as it is that particular pub will be lucky to be left standing in 10 years, let alone the hall.

They have music nights, student nights, and im sure the elderly dances also use the bar (though perhaps not as enthusiatically as the students do! :) )

It isnt massively used, but it isnt barely used either. As i said, its been left to rot somewhat, could at the least use some new tables/chairs.

The idea that there arent people out there willing to have parties, wedding receptions, etc etc, anymore is quite ridiculous. Make it nice, they will come.

As you say, with McMullens intent on selling off as much as possible for short term profit, I would not be suprised to see the pub itself the next target of their attack.

I'm sure they're willing - they just go elsewhere! In its current state, the bar would be better as a fishn chickn shop than lying dormant.

As I've said, its down to the landlord to actually do something with the place, put on regular nights/promotions - but then the OP would likely be against that due to the noise.

So put simply, this objection can't just be out of principle. If the hall is not actively used then McMullens will put this horrible sounding takeaway there. If the objections keep winning, they'll simply pull the whole thing down and put flats there (ala the Red Lion).

Put up or shut up I say.
