What has your MP done for YOU?
« on: October 22, 2009, 11:42:07 AM »
It may appear to be a silly question, but think about it. What, in reality, has your MP done to help you or your family? I raise this question in response to Grant only now making noises about the students making noises. For years this has been going on and people have been complaining about it on here, so why has not a word been said by Grant or any MP? Is it because there's an election comming up perhaps? Of course it is, but they'll spin it and tell you otherwise, maybe even try to dazzle you with a few placed fancy words or made up statistics, but we all know. This incinerator business was all started by the conservative council but here we have a conservative MP saying he doesn't want it. He could easily get the conservative party to bring pressure to bear on those conservative councillors to vote against it if he wanted to. So is it just lip service then by Grant? Of course it is. When you realy look at it, it's not such a silly question.

The more you look at it the more you see an MP has little more than clout to work with. They have one vote in a body of over 650. Each MP has a budget of £0 to spend.

plus the ability to talk to Ministers in the House of Commons on a daily basis.

Kevyn,

I know that you're sufficiently cynical that it would be hard to ever impress you, but regardless of what you make of my work, I think it's a bit disingenuous to suggest that I'm only around at election time. Indeed, even my political opponents might just accept that I'm rarely out of the picture (literally).

In addition to larger campaigns, which to be fair don't always end with the success we'd all like to see - Hospital SOS for example - there are literally thousands, no tens-of-thousands of constituency communication and cases that I've handled over the past few years. I know from the letters and emails of thanks that some, though not all, of this casework ends with a result which can quite literally be life changing for my constituents.

I can't pretend to be able to fix everything. I always tell people at my surgery that I have no magic wand. Peter H is right when he says that MPs are not given specific powers. But I can with my hand on my heart say that I always fight for my constituents and do my best and the election time table has never been a factor in that work in the past and won't be in the future.

Grant.

I would never say grant isn't hard working. In fact, today, David 'the don' Cameron has just got my vote. He's the only MP that's got the Wotsits to speak out about europe. (Bit like Thatcher realy, say what you like about her, but she didn't take any crap from europe). I'm warming to that guy. I hope he turns into a 'Mini me Thatcher' on europe. I'm entitled to change my opinion before anyone tears me a new on and as i see the facts presented before me on his policies so far, he's a winner. Obviously saying and doing are two different things. Lets face it, the chances of those traitorous labour Mps getting back in are zero. labour have sold us down the river to europe and sold out its own voters in favour of forced imigration and lies. And bliar has some grande idea of being some 'europe president'. ok, god help us all. Well done for Cameron for saying like it all is.

I disagree, 'Thatcher the milk snatcher' was bad news for this country and any champaigne swilling conservative party would be equaly as bad.

Just been reading a lot of the polsts of the last few days and am left wondering wohat this forum is often being used for. For myself I have tried to let people know about local issuies that are affecting local people and seeking help, guidance, advice, support and the benefit of anyone's experience. One of the people who has been most helpful, most supportive and has given his time efforts and financial support to Resolve is Grant Shapps MP. I'm not a natural Tory and Grant knows this, but I must say as I find and I see an MP who is most definately doing what I believe MPs should do and that is work for the benefit of his constituency. He works all hours, days, evenings, weekends. I know this for sure. I didn't vote for him in the last election so I'm not saying this as his campaign mananger, but as a fact as I have seen the work he puts in on nehalf of his constituants whether we voted for him or not. Remember, we live in a Parliamentary reformist political system that took place after a revolution that was won by the parliamentarians. It seems to be and standard "British" pass time to slate the governament of the day. It was 1997 when the same things were being said about the last govenrment!! We should either work with it or start another revolution!!

There is no question there will be a new governing party after the next election but we, the electorate will decide who it is so we best get out and vote when the time comes.

Roll on the revolution I say...the current system is ludicrously expensive and doesn't deliver what the people need!

Some sortition would be a great improvement.

Regarding Grant, (who I like)he's certainly expended lots of energy on activity/publicity but not really achieved many worthwhile results and lets face it, it's results that count.

The QE2's in tatters, many post-offices have been closed, there's still no replacement for SplashLands and now his parties council is looking to open an incinerator next to a school!

I'm afraid the only way to affect real change is for the taxpayers to start flexing their financial muscles as all the parties listen when the funds run low.
