Ten years ago there was a consultation about what was said to be an administrative only merger of East Herts NHS Trust and North Herts NHS Trust.  Of course we now know that this was never true and the full merger into the E&N Herts Trust including medical mergers followed - eventually leading to major QE2 services now being axed.

The PCT itself has already changed from being just Welwyn Hatfield to two PCTs in Herts. This will make it one. Since the PCT effectively buys the health services on behalf of us all, perhaps it's not that important, but I thought you'd appreciate seeing a copy of the letter that I've just received.

Hertfordshire Primary Care Trusts to merge
 
 NHS East of England has today announced the outcome of its consultation into the merger of the two Hertfordshire Primary Care Trusts.


The merger of the PCTs was confirmed by the Secretary of State for Health, Rt Hon Andy Burnham, this week.


NHS East and North Hertfordshire and NHS West Hertfordshire (previously known as East and North Hertfordshire PCT and West Hertfordshire PCT) will merge to become a single organisation. This will be known as NHS Hertfordshire and comes into operation on 1st April 2010.


Since their establishment in October 2006, the Hertfordshire PCTs have shared a single integrated management team working across the two organisations with one chief executive and one set of directors. Many staff work for both organisations.


It is estimated that it currently costs about £0.5m per year extra to support two PCTs and their Boards.  The savings created by merging the PCTs will support the PCTs’ drive to improve services for the public.


Stuart Bloom, current Chair of West Hertfordshire PCT has been appointed Chair of the new organisation and seven non-executive directors have also been recruited in recent weeks.   A transition board is now in place to prepare for becoming fully operational when the new organisation is in place at the start of April.   


The consultation showed a strong local support for the merger and respondents made a number of positive suggestions for improving the effectiveness of local partnership working.


Anne Walker, Chief Executive of the PCTs said:


“I am pleased that the majority of local and countywide organisations gave their support to the merger. Many of the responses contained very positive suggestions of how we develop more and better local engagement with partner organisations such as district councils as well as strengthening the links with county organisations.


“We have challenging times ahead and this decision gives us the platform to explore new innovative ways of working with others making the best use of our joint resources to improve the quality of services for patients”.


As well as efficiency savings, the new Hertfordshire Primary Care Trust - NHS Hertfordshire - will be able to strengthen its countywide joint commissioning of mental health services; specialist learning disability services; drug and alcohol services and child and adolescent mental health services; and children’s services.


The new authority will also be aligned geographically with Hertfordshire LINk.  This is the Hertfordshire Local Involvement Network and is a way for local people to have a say about how health and social care services are developed and run.

How has this come about behind our backs AGAIN is there any point in raising any objections when it is a DONE DEAL.
To have a letter appear 6months after the consultation, asking for comments is ludicrous, where was this letter buried when it was relevant.
Why was this NOT posted at the time by Anne Walker as she seems to be on here a lot, dont hide behind confidentiallity clauses as it was supposed to be published.
