Essendon Issues
« on: February 09, 2009, 05:22:10 PM »
Hi All,

I thought I'd set up this Essendon thread for people who live or work in Essendon, I'm very aware that my ward is sometimes focused on Old Hatfield and the Town Centre and Essendon and other villages get missed out or swamped. So this thread is to make reporting problems or issues about Essendon or the villages easier. Postive comments are also very welcome.

Not to be bias but one of the nicest pubs I've ever been to is the Candle Stick! Great times had there.

a new planning application is to be made this week for the siting of a non venacular building adjacent to and in the grounds of a listed building which is also GREEN BELT and on the childrens playing fields.this is so the YMCA can have an office mainly to service there surestart clients in cufley.it's called great wood surestart centre at essendon school and it must be opposed especially after what david cameron said at Demos.it's potentially a white elephant and as a pfi for 25 years.where will the kids play whilst the penpushers sun themselves.to top it all this is the policy decisions of a CONSERVATIVE council.it makes you want to weep.don't you lot do joined up opposition.

the previous tenants have vacated and mcmullens have handed the building back to cecil gascoynes.they in turn have handed the lease to the woodman(cecil gascoynes) proprietor who i believe is reopening within a month or so a freehouse.(for a pint of green king i.p.a for a pint of.................)

It's a shame if the Candlestick has failed. We haven't been for a few months now, but Rick, and his partner Tony, really tried to make a go of it.
MacMullens gave them the funds to make a nice kiddies playground last year.
The Woodman is a great little pub too - a good mix of people and quality
beers - so the Candlestick should fall into good hands. I hope so.
Have MacMullens handed back their lease to Gascoigne Cecil estates??
I think one important factor in the pubs' survival could rest in it becoming a Freehouse, where variety and purchasing power gives the advantage to the pub landlords.
Apparently the 'brewery tie' can be bought off. One pub did this recently for c£12,000.
Makes sense to me.
Then again i've never pulled a pint in my life!

The Candlestick has been refurbished and is now open, serving good beer and food.  I can recommend both.
