Would you donate to keep this forum running & expanding?
« on: December 31, 2008, 06:13:58 PM »
The month's not quite over, but we've already exceeded a quarter-of-a-million page impressions this month and have doubled traffic compared to 2007 with over 2.3m page impressions on this Forum during 08.

So what does the future hold if we're going to keep this going?  Take a look and either comment on this thread or, well you know what on this one...

an error has occurred?

I think its unlikely that people will want to pay to keep the forum going, what with the credit crunch that i keep hearing about and whatnot.  ;)

It looks like you are wrong again Mighty Hatfield: somebody has already contributed.

In any case if the Forum was stopped, you would have to spend more time on your day job.

So because someone pays then everyone will?

So to use that logic:
One of my neighbours is doing alright for themselves financially, it appears you and your doom crew are completely wrong about us being in a recession!

As would us all. Seeing as many on here are tory councillor sockpuppets, that can only be a good thing for our local governance.

i said its unlikely people will pay,

you say im wrong as someone has,

i point out that one person does not represent "people" paying.

Simple really.

Not sure you're right about that Mighty Hatfield. We have already received a very generous donation of half the amount we're currently looking for each month to pay the bills.

I'm thinking of providing some addition benefits for those who help support the forum; perhaps some additional user rights or access to an additional area -- ideas welcome.

As a top 5 poster yourself (with over 1841 posts) I'm sure you're keen to see the forum continue to flourish enabling you and everyone else to have a real voice. The forum has just had another all-time-record month which I'll post about soon and Forum traffic has once again doubled over the previous year to over 2.3m page impressions.

If we/you want this to continue then we need to bring in a bit of cash.  That doesn't need to be at the very generous level of our first contribution which can be viewed here http://www.shapps.com/forum/index.php?action=treasury -- but a small amount from regular users and others, would definitely help secure, expand and better promote the Welwyn Hatfield Forum going forward.

The Donations page is here: http://www.shapps.com/forum/index.php?action=treasury

Happy New Year,

Nope - I'm a member of forums far, far larger/busier than this that are completely free.

Hi AL10, As someone who has made nearly 2,000 posts on this forum, I would have hoped that you would have appreciated its value. Someone has to pay for the server space and bandwidth (that's me personally currently) + we want to expand the forum through promotion, but there's no pressure to contribute.

I am pleased to report that others are donating and the latest details can be found here:

I do appreciate its value, unfortunately us working classes are being crippled by the Government, and this pesky credit crunch thingy is nabbing all my spare cash! Sorry guv!

To be serious for a second, there are alternatives to asking for money from the users, as I've said much larger forums than this survive without donations, be it advertising or whatever.

But I bet a lot of them are funded by advertising. To be honest, a few discrete Google AdSense banners could work quite well on here and generate more than enough money - going by the traffic levels the forum attracts.

Exactly, as i said previously i'd be happy with some Google banners, a site this busy would generate a fair bit.

They already exist on the forum, but must be very discrete indeed it seems ;-).

Seriously though, I'm happy to have a variety of different ways of funding this forum's progress which is what we have now achieved with both Google Ads and the DONATIONS button. Both are working.
