Go out at night? No thanks.  For one, I do not like being out at night and two I try and keep my sons bedtime at the same time.

The doors are revolving in the day, but 'you' still have to walk the length of the store - even to get a loaf. I have started to go to Iceland more - in part so they at least get some custom .... and hopefully get enough to stay in the town!

But at least you can go to Asda at night and pay for your shopping without queueing up for an hour to use one of a handful of self-service checkouts!!

I really cannot see that they will ever re-open that revolving door. I'm sure they'd rather just 'fill it in' and get rid of it altogether.

I went past last week - the revolving doors were not 'revolving'... and it was about 9.10 a.m. - surely they should be 'revolving' by then?

Hi Folks,

A welcome update on the ASDA revolving door issue for your information...

MP welcomes ASDA planning application to replace revolving doors

The problematic revolving door at Hatfield's ASDA is to be replaced after pressure from locals residents backed by MP Grant Shapps.

The door, which many accused of starving the troubled town centre of shoppers because of technical faults and limited opening hours, will be replaced in a £100,000 refit, providing a planning application currently in front of the council is approved. A new set of sliding doors will take its place, capable of manual operation if things go wrong.

Grant Shapps had previously successfully asked ASDA's management team to allow the door to remain open until later each day, allowing shoppers to move more easily between Hatfield's high street and the superstore.

Automatic sensors were also causing safety concerns and had led to shoppers getting trapped inside the doors after sudden stops. The MP recently went to view plans for the new doors and was pleased to see that they would be much more user-and Hatfield-friendly.

Mr Shapps said he was impressed that decisive action was being taken: "I've had many people come to me and comment that the town centre was losing out because of this problem. When the doors are closed, ASDA's customers feel less inclined to go into the town centre before or after going to the supermarket. Rather than walking the extra few hundred metres or so, they just got in their cars and left.

"It might seem such a small thing, but ASDA is an important part of the town centre and has a big role to play in it. I'm really glad they listened when I took these concerns to them."

Corporate Affairs Manager, Guy Mason, also agreed that he would ask the store to review the fact that once inside the store, shoppers still have to walk to the other end before getting into the shopping area itself.

Here's the existing revolving door plan, the new sliding door and picture by the problem doors. Click To Enlarge:

They're going to need to hire another couple of security guards then. Having those doors open late at night will be perfect for shoplifters wanting to escape nice and quickly.

The later opening (until 6) is already in operation by the way.

Hi all,

I know that this thread has been running for over a year, but I think it's important that these problems are dealt with rather than forgotten.

You'll already know that following representations from me and others ASDA agreed to keep the back door into the Town Centre open for longer hours which has been welcome, but the underlying problem has also been the unreliability of the revolving door.  ASDA agreed to replace this door and a post from me above publishes those plans.

I have just been informed that the builders will be on-site at the store from the 17th Aug until the 14th Sept 09 to fit the new doors.

This is a surprisingly complex task which has involved seeking planning permsission and congratulations to ASDA for putting in the effort, particularly given the very large cost involved in solving this problem.

At least that willl save the Borough Council providing excuses for not enforcing the planning permission requirement that ASDA do this.

So work has begun...

...however - you'll still have to walk all the way down to the other end to start your shopping as there will be no way in to the store unless you go through one of the tills - annoying other customers in the process.

A solution to this would be to put in automatic "in only" gates - like the ones in Tesco for example - which are alarmed if anybody tries to get through them the wrong way.

Why can't they see these solutions for themselves I wonder - why do they have to wait until they receive a barrage of complaints from the general public (their customers) and even the local MP?

Is the walk really that bad? Surely you'll be walking about inside the store anyway?!

Give them time to sort out some barriers, as they'll need to do something to help stop an increase in shoplifting as a result of re-opening these doors.

No the walk is not that bad! It is human nature though to want to enter the store and begin shopping at the place you've entered the store - for instance if you only want a loaf of bread and you come in from the town centre side it is very annoying having to walk all the way up past the tills to get in to the store and then having to walk all the way back to where you just came in!

This is an evident fact every time I go into the place as I see people dodging past people trying to pay at the tills all the time and even some going through the closed tills, just moving the pull across barrier out the way.

The failure of ASDA to keep the door open - and the failure of the Borough Council to enforce planning permission is really important - keep the door closed, and inevitably less people will use the town centre.

The town centre economy is fragile enough at the best of times, let alone now, and closing one of the entrances to it doesn't help local shopkeepers.

It seems that this is the only real benefit to having that door.

My american friend who visted here earlier this year was very taken with the revolving door at ASDA, there's nothing like it (or was now it seems) over there in Kansas.

He,ll miss it when he returns next year!

BIG wave to Chris & Stephanie out there in the wilds of Kansas. :D

The last few days, the door has been closed - anyone know why? It appears to be having alot of work done on it. I wondered if they are going to take it away now and replace it with automatic ones? Would be better!
