Brocket Hall
« on: July 13, 2008, 06:28:20 PM »
Hello

My name is Johnnie Manckiy; I am a history student at University in the United States.  I am working on a research project on British country houses during World War Two.  I am interested in learning about the experiences of people who lived, worked and were stationed in Britain's stately homes during the war. Also I am interested in learning how country house adapted to the new roles as schools, hospitals, and homes for evacuees, and military centers.

I am researching Brocket Hall  during the war. I would be very intrested to hear from any one with meniores of thees estates.

You can e-mail me at

johnniemanckiy@centurytel.net

Thak you,

Johnnie

Dear Johnnie

Welcome to Lemsford. We have emailed each other via the Local History Group
http://www.lemsfordhistory.co.uk/
and I know you have already  found out about the maternity home at Brocket Hall and Lemsford House. Please  update the forum site with any information you find out.

Good luck with your research

Hi Andy,

Thank you, I wanted to go ahead and post what information I have found on Brocket so far. I as get new information I will add it to the forum.

In 1939 Brocket Hall was used by the City of London Maternity Hospital. During this time the 2nd Baron and Baroness Brocket lived at Kinnersley Castle and at there other estates (but I am not for sure). The hospital was run by the local county council. In 1946 the City of London Maternity Hospital took over financial responsibility from the county council. I am not sure when the Hospital closed and the hall was returned to Lord Brocket. I believe it had to before 1949.

The Imperial War Museum has a collection of 9 photographs taken at Brocket in 1942 for the Ministry of Information.

The London Record office hold some records on the hospital. Administration: Reports concerning Brocket Hall Emergency Maternity Hospital  H10/CLM/A/07  1939 - 1940

The National Archives site gives a little detail on the City of London Maternity Hospital and on there use of Brocket.
