Cycling to Welwyn/Knebworth
« on: June 26, 2009, 10:38:46 AM »
My wife and I are making an effort to get back on our bikes to regain some fitness in our 60's. so we rode to Welwyn and a bit beyond from our house just off Knightsfield as a starter. We used the narrow path alongside the dual carriageway and stayed on footpaths as far as it was safe to do so, i.e. no houses with driveways and a lack of pedestians.
Today I suggested doing the same ride but my wife wasn't keen due the rough and bumby nature of the above mentioned path. Surely this path can be  made an official cycle/footpath, widened a bit and smoothed to make it more acceptable to cyclists.
Also, I can't see any easy and safe means for a cyclist to get from Knebworth to Bessemer Road. If there were cycle paths ideally on both sides of the road it might encourage more people out of their cars.
This council should be doing a lot more for cyclists than they do.

Cycle path development is controlled by the Welwyn Urban Transport Plan which runs from 2008-2011.  One of the long term aims is to continue the path from Bessemer Road to Welwyn and then on to Oaklands, but there's no timescale for this.  The only works being done in WGC in the short term are Broadwater Road (so you can go from Bessemer Road onto Mill Green and Hatfield) and the missing bit of path at Stanborough to complete the WGC - Hatfield Business Park route.  As always it's down to tight money and priority being given to road building (£600,000 for cycle paths accross the whole county v several million for roads).  Which where Welwyn Hatfield Cycling Forum hopes we can lobby to make a difference. Do please look at our web site www.welhatcycling.org.uk and do join us.

Having said all that, a practial suggestion or two:

Have you tried the Cole Green Way to Hertford or the Great North Way to Stevenage or even the Ayot Greenway to Wheathampstead?

You can down load the maps from the WHBC web site at

http://www.welhat.gov.uk/transportstreets/walkingcycling/cycling

Unfortunately the Pedal Point service is suspended at the moment so you can't ask for the set to be posted to you. Rest assured WHCF have asked why this has happened, just at the time of year when people are keen to get out and about. Apparently the council has had a restrucuring....

Hope helps

As I said we are getting on the bikes to regain some sort of fitness so at the moment something easy and safe is required and the route to Welwyn is at least flat and can be done safely. I certainly do not want to cycle through town, I want something nice to look at.
For me the bridleways are the nicest places to be but that kind of riding demands much more fitness. Its a pity footpaths are not open to cyclists.

The Ayot Green Way (like the Alban Way and Cole Green Way) is an old railway line and is fairly flat,
You should be able to get from Knightsfiels through Sherrardswood.
