Who does the best food?

The Sun Inn or the Long & Short Arm?

I prefer the SI myself, especially the Sunday Carvery...good choice of well cooked meet, tonnes of veggies and lovely ambience. oh, and great selection of real ales and wine.

Where is the Sun Inn?   Is it the old 'Crooked Chimney'?

Crooked Chimney is in Cromer Hyde and was called the Chequers before 1968. The 2 pubs in the Village are the Sun and The Long Arm & Short Arm See link for more details

I go to the Long & Short more than The Sun but don't eat at either.
However, customers at the Long & Short are often treated to haunches of venison, hare and
'game' sausages by a local marksman who lives locally.
The venison was very nice but I felt guilty eating it.
The Sun is a little spoilt aesthetically by the storage of stainless steel, works canteen style servery's
which are bang outta keeping with the pub which was built in 74BC.
It used to be a yuppie pub but most certainly isn't now !

Dear Broadside

Sorry to shock you but the Sun  was mentioned in 1717  and the first licensee was a widow Ann Gilbert. If you are interested in the history of the Pub and Lemsford the local History Group produce some excellent Booklets see link
http://www.lemsfordhistory.co.uk/lemsford-local-history-group-publications.htm
I do agree with you , as I also like pubs with the old fashion feel to them.
Thank you for the information about the game food, I think the marksman is a former gamekeeper of the local farm.

THE EAST what/who in blue blazes has renamed it. I think it was one of my younger days haunts known as "The Bull" at stanboro or the "Cavalier Steak" house but now "The East" ????
IS nothing sacred??

Aracnid,
Sadly the Bull - as it was formerly known turned into a big, sad and often empty pub.
Despite makeovers and becoming a 'Brewers Fayre' type gastro pub it still felt shabby and lifeless
and couldn't compete with the Beefeater at the other end of Stanborough Road.
After some hefty refurbishment The Bull re-opened as The East (I don't like the name either) a chinese
restaurant. This is such an improvement. We go there about once a fortnight. Good food and a nice
atmosphere. We've also made friends of the staff and have taken a group out to Hatfield's Farmers
Market, Hatfield Park & London. I've also been doing a bit of missionary work and three are now confirmed
Chelsea fans.
I don't think any of them are actually Chinese though funnily enough !

The Bull is my local and has been for 13 years. The Bull has been there since 1938. Before that it was over the road, next to No 1 Great North Road and was built in 1822. Another bull was in this area from early 1700 and changed its name to Horse & Groom, then Jockey and also known as The seven Stars. The reason I know this, is   I am a member of Lemsford Local History Group and look after the archives. I also sell a booklet on behalf of the group which raises funds the book was written by Stan Borrie a member of the Village,  with help from other members. The book explains the lost Pubs like The Angel, Roebuck, Lamb and a pub opposite  St Johns Church called Wagon & Horses( also known as The Star and Church Gate) .
If you wish to support the group or are interested in the local pubs go to
http://www.lemsfordhistory.co.uk/lemsford-local-history-group-publications.htm
At only £2.50 a copy please order a copy and support your local History Group.
Thank You

On a lighter note than my last entry I wonder if you remember the golden age of the Bull when it was a steak house called The Cavalier. It was the mid 70’s you could enjoy Prawn cocktail, Steak and Black forest gateaux washed down with a fine wine, Blue Nun or the other one which you took the bottle home and made a lamp.

Dear Broadside
I agreed with you reply 9 about the Bull and it demise. When I Started to use it again in 1994 it was a good menu of steaks etc with a public bar that was always full and showed a lot of Sport. It was run by a good landlord Ken. The Pub was sold to the Punch group and became the Big Steak then 2 for 1 It had a couple of good landlords, I remember a Welshman called Bryne with his wife Rose and another couple before the I think called Pat and Mary. Most of the landlords in that period seemed to run it down, I think to  buy it cheap. The bar became deserted and had a drugs problem. The final year before the East took over was very rough and sad.
The East is called the East due to the owner starting in Borehamwood with a restaurant called the East and extending the brand. We go over to eat on a regular basis and the food is excellent but costs more than the average Chinese meal. The beer is about £3 a pint.  The layout of the pub is split into 3 sections a bar area with the old table and chairs, a relaxed eating are for large parties and a traditional restaurant.
Mon to Thurs not busy , Fri to Sat best book and Sunday they do an excellent buffet for £9 The staff are excellent and I would recommend it for a special occasion or a good night out. Only negative  is the tip is 10% and added to you bill, which is Ok due to the great service but I like to decide if I tip. If you buy your drinks at the bar when you go in and have them taken to the table then they appear at 10% more on the bill.
Please  find Link  to east http://www.the-east.net/
I will also link you to a local site with all the pubs/eating in the Lemsford area to show no bias
