Welcome to the Lemsford Village board. I have been asked to be moderator for Lemsford. I have lived in the area (Stanborough) for 13 years and Welwyn Garden for 50 years. My involvement with the village has been via the school, fete, local history group and Lemsford Springs. Looking forward to all correspondence.

Hi all,

I'm delighted to introduce a new forum board specifically for residents of Lemsford Village.  This is where you can discuss local issues and concerns and whilst anyone can read posts, you must be registered in order to post up a new message.

As Andy has said he's going to moderate this new board and I'm very grateful to him for his time.

If you're not already a registered member of the Welwyn Hatfield Forum then it's free and you can join up right here:
http://www.shapps.com/forum/index.php?action=register

Enjoy!

I have set up a website for the Village called Lemsfordonline to link all the village websites together and inform of events. I would like to promote a traditional event run by Edna Stephens in her garden. The event is Easter Egg Hunt, for more details go to www.lemsfordonline.co.uk and click on 'Life in Lemsford' Please use site to promote any local event, club, society or news

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the 'Lemsford on line' link. I spent plenty of time in Lemsford during school holidays;
fishing, swimming in the broadwater and even purchased my first ever alcoholic drink, aged 15, in the
Long & Short Arm where I asked for "a pint of beer". I was then asked "Which one?" by the barman,
to the amusement of my older college mates. I also remember the Post Office / sweet shop.
A mate of mine, John H the stationer, wrote a book about Lemsford when he was 12 ish.
He was one of the choir that used to sing for Lady Brocket in the House. He also told me about
the race course in Brocket Park (I've now got the book) and that a 'world title' bare knuckle boxing
match once took place there between some Spanish noblemans' champion and Lord Brockets' champ
in the village. Then there's all the Dick Turpin stuff. John knew a metal detectorist who unearthed a
flintlock pistol in a particular Turpinesque place too.....
And then there was Lemmy's Transport Cafe after the pub aah memories.

I still do a bit of bird watching from the hides at Lemsford Springs - which used to have cress beds
due to the clean spring water.

Hi Andy

My nieces and nephews were all Christened at Lemsford Church (and lately my great niece).

Also, they all attended St John's school (very good school btw).  My sister doesn't live that far from you and (usually, if she still does) deliver the Parish Magazine (Focus I think it is called).

I have a friend who still lives in the village - husband plays in a Jazz band.

All the best
Kay

Dear Kay

Thank you for your message. The local booklet that is produced every month is called the 'Parish News' and is edited by Geoffrey Hollis. I would like to thank Geoffrey ( and helpers, if any) for his time and effort in producing this booklet.

Hi all
Memories oh memories, As a youngster I used to cycle up to the playing fields behind the church (now Lemsford Hall and football Pitch).
The veiw was lost on me aas a youngster but the swings and roundabout were a joy to play on (circa 1946 +).
The other memory was the Cobbler who had the Shop next to, "The Long Arm and Short Arm" sadly now dissappeared under the carpark, who charge the large sum(at the time) 6d to sole and heel each shoe or a Bob for the full job.

Gone are those days !!!

When Grant Shapps ask me to be a moderator, I was not sure what it entailed. After a couple of weeks and a few messages my original thought about the forum has changed.
I had a preconceived idea it would be mostly the community not happy and wanting answers to events in the area that effected them. I now feel this is part of the forums remit but it now becoming clear it for people to feel involved with people who share memories or inform them of events happening in the area . Part of the reason Grant Shapps asked me was due to  my community site www.lemsfordonline.co.uk I was asked on the site to build a village notice board, and I think the forum will provide this service.
I looked up forum on the internet and found this definition

a. The public square or marketplace of an ancient Roman city that was the assembly place for judicial activity and public business.
b. A public meeting place for open discussion.
c. A medium of open discussion or voicing of ideas, such as a newspaper or a radio or television program.
2. A public meeting or presentation involving a discussion usually among experts and often including audience participation.

So please continue to tell us about what makes Lemsford special.

I would like to tell you about a member of our community Eleanore Titmus who with her family wakes you up on a Sunday by ringing the church bells. Over Easter she is going on an adventure to Morocco to help a charity called Link Community Development.
Go to http://www.lemsfordonline.co.uk/eleanor.html
She needs your support!

Hi Andy- Thanks for this. I did see a sign on Sunday just gone and wondered how to find out more about it.  My sister has offered to give me a lift there with my son so he / we can do the hunt.

Although, the prize of an Easter Egg is tempting - I had better not buy any tickets for it!! *smiles*.

Thanks again.

Hi Andy,

Though I don't live in the village I attend St John's and have friends who do. It is good to see a board dedicated to Lemsford. I hope everyone will support the annual Fete at St John's on the Mayday Bank Holiday on 5th May!

Thanks Sarah

I am going to start A new topic on Lemsford for the fete as it does raise money for the school and church and provides a great day out for Lemsford and the surrounding area . It is one of the biggest fetes in Hertfordshire. I would also like to thank Liz Potter and all her helpers for the time they spend on making the fete such a success.
