Didn't show the photos as he had some children with him.. will do so soon.. had a word with his wife today and she reckons the RSPCA were up there couple of days back and took one horse away.. haven't heard from anyone which one it was.. hope it was Summer.. if not.. will try to find the owner and buy her for rehoming.. my heart is ruling my head.. I know there are hundreds out there in the same position.. just something I feel is right.. too damn soft for my own good..

Disgusting cruelty - how long must this go on?
« Reply #78 on: March 26, 2009, 06:48:41 PM »
How long must this suffering go on? Just look at that poor horse's face. Perhaps Jonathan Ross might bring attention to this by way of redeeming his latest faux pas. I think the media is the only solution here:

 http://www.thisissomerset.co.uk/news/Ross-clears-air-Dreamy/article-840416-detail/article.html

Or perhaps we could post a story about the issue on the Traveller's Times online blog and let the community deal with it themselves?  Especially as I gather from other photos Shep that many of these horses are actually really well looked after? Perhaps the bad apple needs shaming by his fellow travellers???

I for one feel so frustrated and sad about this. Any other thoughts?

You are right MT.. not all travellers treat there animals like the owners of Summer.. it's not what we the gorger's would think correct.. but I feel we have put most animals that have been domesticated into the pet section which is a bit daft.. Horses..they need the basics of food.. water and shelter from the elements.. this is the law.. as owners we love them.. treat them as part of the family.. Breeding on a big scale.. Horses missed out.. it's not just the travellers that are treating this species as a commodity.. across Europe the lives of these animals have hit rock bottom.. travelling.. live.. to slaughter houses.. maybe as far as Southern Italy.. without food and water in extremly high temperatures for 48 hours.. We as humans dictate.. these creatures have the mind of a 2 year old.. can you imagine the dreadful stress to foals..females.. pregnant mares.. stallions.. all in one lorry stacked in together for hours in extremely high temps.. I know I digress.. just get too involved with the whole aspect.. Thing is.. many of these horses up there.. near to us.. might be soon going on that dreadful journey.. Belgium might be their destination.. Favourite place for horse meat..on the hoof.. I for one.. care..

Too late. I am in tears this morning having just seen the WHTimes online.

http://www.whtimes.co.uk/content/whtimes/news/story.aspx?brand=WHTOnline&category=News&tBrand=HertsCambsOnline&tCategory=newslatestWHT&itemid=WEED29%20Mar%202009%2009%3A57%3A54%3A057

I cannot believe the RSPCA have done nothing to prevent this. What an utter disgrace. Who the hell do these people think they are? They certainly believe they are above the law. Would they leave one of their children out in a field to die? I am so mad. That poor foal was only a year old.

Disgusting, sad but predictable

This issue was first raised here on 11th February 2008. What a shambles. The authorities that were aware of this should be ashamed of themselves.

...too late. How many times had they already been told about this unfolding tragedy? Indeed, even Grant sought reassurance about this before Christmas (see above) What on earth are we supposed to do if even the involvement of an MP can't help prevent this sort of neglect?

This is really sickening. How can people be so wantonly cruel? And why does it seem the Police and animal welfare organisations are unable to act even though reports of cruelty and neglect have been filed with them over a sustained period of time. I was walking over these fields the other weekend and noticed horses that were in a very weak state. It doesn't strike me as normal behaviour for horses to remain completely prone on a lovely sunny morning and struggle to get up on approach. Several of them were thin and lethargic and some had missing hair like the picture of the filly before. Goodness knows how they've made it through the winter without additional feed/blankets/shelter. We may have laws to prevent cruelty to animals but they're meaningless if not  enforced.

What if this were a baby?
« Reply #84 on: March 30, 2009, 09:07:25 PM »
A young horse is put to sleep after terrible, long known about, neglect. Do we really deserve to be known as a nation of animal lovers?

Hush-a-bye, don't you cry,
Go to sleepy little baby

Dead horse dumped in local wood was left for five days...

...five days despite calls to police and RSPCA? What the hell is going on?

http://www.whtimes.co.uk/content/whtimes/news/story.aspx?brand=WHTOnline&category=News&tBrand=HertsCambsOnline&tCategory=newslatestWHT&itemid=WEED31%20Mar%202009%2016%3A54%3A16%3A940

Police are reported as saying there was no foul play and that the animal could have been dumped to save on disposal charges. Erm, I call this the most hideous form of flytipping I've ever come across...what's the fine for that?

RSPCA denies concerned people's claims that horse left in St Albans' field is starving. I hope they are right.

So the RSPCA say people can't expect them to remove animals reported to them as they have to establish ownership, OK fair enough:
"We have taken steps to advise who ever's horse it is that they have 14 days to remove the animal.
"This has happened before and this course of action has worked before."
When they say this action has worked before it seems to imply that it's a success if whoever has left these animals to fend for themselves can relocate them elsewhere to presumabley continue the neglect rather than for the RSPCA to be able to remove the animal and give it proper care. I can understand it may be a dilemma to find suitable homes for all these rescued horses but then isn't it all part of the  RSPCA's aim to prevent abuse rather than shift it on? It all seems rather circular and hopeless :-\

Anger over terrible neglect that led horses to die

...but will anything ever be done to stop this much known-about problem? How long will the buck continue to be passed between local authorities, the police, the RSPCA and DEFRA???
