Department for Transport responds to calls from Shapps and Hertfordshire MPs to improve A1M motorway

Welwyn Hatfield MP Grant Shapps brought together Oliver Dowden CBE MP, Charles Walker OBE MP, and the Rt. Hon Sir Oliver Heald QC MP to call on the Department for Transport and Highways England to improve the capacity of the A1M motorway.

The Rt. Hon John Hayes CBE MP, Minister of State at the Department for Transport, has responded to a letter co-signed by Grant Shapps MP, detailing the steps taken by Highways England towards implementing a smart motorway in Hertfordshire.

The letter confirms that work has already commenced to develop the operational concept for the scheme to convert junctions 6-8 of the A1M into a smart motorway.

Grant said: “Although I welcome the news that Highways England are already working to convert the A1M into a smart motorway, I will continue to press for the completion of this motorway by 2020 and for further improvements to increase the capacity of the A1M in general.”
